Relay for Life

Relay for life is a all night walk-a-thon to raise funds for the Cancer Council at various locations across Australia. Participants are sponsored either by lap or a one-off donation by how many laps of the oval they walk. Teams comprise of 10-15 members which take turns to walk around the oval all night for 18 hours. This year Rotaract MQ had a team of 12 which began set up at 2pm and walked till 10am. The team raised approximately $500 over a period of 3 months. The estimated total raised from the event is $30 000 which is an amazing effort.

The event included bands which dedicated their performances to loved ones who have had cancer. Also, various survivors of cancer spoke about their experience and how it has changed them. Other activities included a Masterchef challenge and the Miss Relay Contest (a cross dressing competition for males). Most of the Rotaract MQ team did not estimate how cold and windy the night was and relied on playing soccer throughout the night to keep warm. If they weren't outside, they were inside battling over a game of Pictionary. After a sleepless and windy night Rotaract MQ held a morning BBQ breakfast of bacon and egg rolls. Much thanks to North Ryde Rotary for lending their trailer BBQ.
